Omar S the best

Born and raised in Detroit, an automotive worker. His catalogue goes on and on, however he started his label back in 2001 and no one cared. Then Oasis One happened and he became noticed. Fabric 45 happened and he stormed the European scene. His music has reached people all over the world. Mysterious by nature, you won?t get many answers from him. You can tell where he has been by listening to his many releases. You will never guess where he is going from here. His catalogue definitely speaks for itself, no matter what you are looking for his music stands alone, “Just ask the Lonely”. www.omarsdetroit.us

Jason Lev

Considered a leading authority on obscure R&B 12 inches and 45′s from the mid 70′s to early 80′s, Jason Lev has been involved in the dj/collector community for over 15 years.

Since 1999, Lev has released the much acclaimed SOUND OF GOLD mix series which served as a digging template for countless top ten lists around the world. He also runs TRUTH IS LIGHT RECORDS – a label focused on licensing and reediting unknown or lost dance hits of another time and place. A master programmer and one of the deepest collections in the game: Jason Lev is THE dj’s, DJ. “Innovative live black music for the most discerning listeners and dancers.” www.truthislightrecords.com

Welcome to their universe where vintage synthesizers, vocoders & talkbox coexist with a voice that has a timeless soul. Together their music takes you to a familiar past: the groove of Nu Shooz to the dripping sex appeal of Minneapolis Funk, the dance vibes of 80′s Freestyle music to the intergalactic synths of Paul Hardcastle, the playfulness of The Jets to the smoothness of the S.O.S Band.

Love & Electrik gets you with a classic style but also sends you light years into an unknown but beautiful future. Enter Roxy, a quirky, yet sexy woman that embodies the LOVE…Love for a soulsonic force that guides her voice and her life. Enter Kevin, he is the ELECTRIK…he’s the pulse, the manipulator of rhythm and synthesizer of sound!

With the sexy, playful single, “Sex Video” now available on Beatport.com and coming soon to iTunes, through Tremendous Records (Last Gang Records), the duo have already been chosen as the opening acts for the likes of LaRoux, Chromeo, Amanda Blank, Little Dragon, Devlin & Darko (Spank Rock DJ’s), & The Very Best. With all this momentum, Love & Electrik aren’t just heading towards any other explosion but instead, a Big Bang!

Project: Gramorail

Gramorail began with a whimsical vision by the Vancouver Design Nerds to design and build pedal-powered cars that would connect to one another and form a human-powered “party train”; a train that could be paraded along unused rail corridors in Vancouver. Gramorail brings attention to the city’s rich rail heritage and promotes a sustainable mode of transportation.

Over the last year the project has taken on an identity of its own and the spectacular vision has been realized with the completion of two railcars!

Built by an ever-growing cast of contributors, including members of the Nerds in partnership with eatART, the railcars are a kinetic sculpture that acts both as vehicle and stage. It features a sound system projected through a larger-than-life gramophone, a hand-crafted chess board, and 100 feet of track that can be transported to public events, celebrations and festivals in Vancouver and beyond!

Powered by an “engine” of 4 people on the locomotive car, the Gramorail can accommodate 6 to 8 passengers in the luxurious and finely crafted gramophone passenger car.

Gramorail is making its 4th public appearance at the New Forms Festival, preceded by eatART Powers the VAG in July, eatART’s Wavelength Film Festival & Masquerade in August, and Burning Man in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada earlier this month. It will also be at the Sustenance Festival at the Roundhouse Community Centre from Oct. 8th -16th.

Biography:

The Vancouver Design Nerds are a network of collaborators from various backgrounds who share a desire to engage in design opportunities with a spirit of creative play and to challenge the normative environment of the city.

eatART fosters new media art research with a focus on large-scale, kinetic and robotic sculpture. Their projects use art to educate people about the role energy plays in our lives and to raise questions about the social and environmental impacts of energy use.

Exhibition Dates: Thu, September 9 – Sat, October 16, 2010
Opening Thursday Sept. 9, 8-11pm
Using animation, sounds, warping and time shifts this 5 min video loop runs forwards
and backwards looking for forgotten details, mimicking the way memories are replayed in the mind. LoopLoop is made from an image sequence Patrick Bergeron captured in a train traveling to Hanoi in Vietnam. Bergeron filmed the houses along the railroad. The 1000 images of this sequence have been stitched into one long panoramic image. Moving elements have been seamlessly integrated into the panoramic still activating it in subtle and surprising ways.

While traveling in South-East Asia, Bergeron captured the day-to-day events,
places, and people he encountered:

“When I came back home, many experiences and details had already been forgotten.
My brain failed at accommodating the abundance of the subjects met. When I look at the video tapes of my travels, I remember those past events. My memory is activated by these images. By watching them several times, I detect new interesting facts; a dog hidden in a corner, a sign on a wall, a strange person. For now on each one of these new details, unperceived before, takes part and contributes to my memories and souvenirs.”

Video artist and researcher, Patrick Bergeron, modifies and manipulates the image and its details. He is interested in the concepts of speed, memories and the image components. His work is a mix of animation, experimental film and documentary. For the last 15 years, he has been working in special effects for the film industry and has worked on films such as The Lord of the Rings and The Matrix.

NFF TEN: ‘Traversing Electronic Narratives’ focuses on the diversity and ingenuity of the media arts scene in Vancouver, and how it speaks to the greater world of art today. Strictly working with locally based artists in Vancouver, the exhibition tells a narrative involving video, sound, sensors, mobility, location, interactivity, participation, diversity and history. Looking at work developed in Vancouver over the past 10 years, the exhibition speaks to both the development of the media arts scene in Vancouver over that period of time as well as how this relates to the greater history of the city during this period. Themes of change, location, surveillance, exploration, myth, travel and meditation take us from direct documentation and stories about the land where the exhibition takes place, to journeys of physics far beyond the confines of the exhibition. At its core Traversing Electronic Narratives is a story of growth, experimentation and the multiplicity of artistic experiences that play a role in media arts today.

“Native graffiti art, indigenized ipods, Inuit break dancing, indigenous-language hip hop and video, Indian bling and urban wear: the roots of hip hop culture and music have been transformed by indigenous cultures and identities into new forms of visual culture and music that echo the realities of Aboriginal people.

Biography:

Times Neue Roman rock with a general tone and attitude of teenage immortality. Comprised of an award winning poet, Arowbe (Robert Bolton) and composer, Alexander The, TNR’s peerless ‘one of one’ sound has been called “nintendo-punk-rap” and “post-rap” by media and supporters. Since debuting
at the Vancouver Art Gallery in 2008, Times Neue Roman have been rousing crowds at basement jams, rooftops, auto-garages, house parties, shitty pubs, glitzy clubs and out the back of a U-HAUL truck.
Their most recent release “Talking Sporty” (YYZ Records) is included in the newly formed Pabst Blue Ribbon music program, and a coinciding vinyl release with Art Metropole.
